[Madison, Wisc…] With Common Core on pause in Wisconsin and public opposition to it growing, a group of 34 state lawmakers are pushing for public hearings and a Legislative Council study. The lawmakers sent a letter to Sen. Luther Olsen and Rep. Joan Ballweg, who many Common Core critics see as blocking any attempts to slow down implementation.
The current state budget requires the Department of Public Instruction to hold hearings on Common Core. It also recommended the Legislative Council study, which the 34 lawmakers are now formally requesting.
Olsen is the chair of the Senate Committee on Education. Superintendent Tony Evers began implementing Common Core in Wisconsin in 2010 without transparency or public awareness, the letter asserts.
